Following the events of the Fracturing, the Primarchs disagreed on how to continue with the survival of humanity, splitting and forming miniature empires. In the closing years of the Fracturing, the Sol system fell to a horde of Daemons, and the Emperor Himself was killed.
Humanity was plunged into the darkness of Old Night for another 1,000 years, putting a dramatic halt to the Great Crusade.
Scared of the new threat humanity would prove with 20 Primarchs and a fully functional Webway, the Ruinous Powers triggered the Fracturing a series of galaxy wide warp storms that prevented all warp travel for a millennium. Making considerable progress with the human Webway, the Emperor almost completes the project in a relatively short period of time. At the height of this crusade, after the greatest Ork empire ever seen was crushed, the Emperor retreated to Terra to secretly work on the Webway Project, appointing Tybalt Ulric of the Dusk Knights as Warmaster for the remainder of the Crusade. For 250 years, the Imperium of Man embarked on a galaxy wide crusade to reunite humanity and eliminate the myriad threats to the galaxy. When the Emperor created the 20 Primarchs, he flung them across the galaxy to invigorate his newly created Legiones Astartes, blaming the deed on the Ruinous Powers. When the Fracturing lifts, many of the Emperor's Primarchs form their own empires. Fractured Imperium is a Warhammer 40,000 Alternate Universe project, set in an alternate timeline where the Horus Heresy does not take place, and instead the Fracturing happens, preventing most warp travel for a millennia.
